“For our brand, reputation is everything.”
Telenor Group needed a DAM that met their strict GDPR and compliance requirements, but one that was also easy to navigate.
They needed to be able to set access permissions for different user groups and a sensible folder structure to represent their different teams – without unnecessary extras!
Telenor Group is a leading telecoms provider that brings connectivity services to approximately 160 million customers in the Nordics and Asia – and it’s still growing. The group has 11,000 employees operating in a variety of markets including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
Their portfolio of services includes a mobile operator, an IT operator, a broadband service provider, a provider of Internet of Things (IoT) and digital services.
In addition, they’re implementing innovative AI solutions across their operations, from customer service to network optimisation.
“We are a large, complex company,” explains Henrik Sigmundstad, director, multimedia, Telenor. “So our people in different markets all have their own, very different digital asset requirements.
“For example, our staff in Denmark will need access to core assets from the group – but they will also have their own assets in the Danish language,” and they need to be able to easily manage the different assets.
This is where Asset Bank’s folder-by-folder permissions-setting works really well for Telenor.
The easy-to-navigate folder system means Telenor’s images, icons, posters, adverts, videos and other outward-facing assets can be organised by country and by department.
“So we have a folder for Norway, a folder for Denmark, etc,” explains Henrik. “Within those folders we have a marketing folder where we store our marketing assets, a branding folder where we store our brand images, etc. It’s so simple.”
And, admins can set access permissions for different users for each folder, based on which folders they want them to have access to.
“We really like the folder approach.”
Even small features have made important differences – staff in different markets have been able to customise their own folders with easily identifiable logos. So simple, yet so effective.
Telenor was no stranger to using digital asset management (DAM) software to manage their branding and marketing media – they’d been using a large and complex DAM for eight years already!
But that was where that DAM was failing them. It was just too large and too complex for Telenor’s needs. It had too many features that weren't being used. And features they really needed had to be paid for as add-ons. What they wanted was a less complicated, all-in-one system that could serve all Telenor staff, wherever they were in the world.
After months analysing the DAM market, Telenor shortlisted Asset Bank.
Asset Bank stood out from the competition because of the free, 30-day trial where customers can – metaphorically speaking – kick the tyres and slam the doors.
“We were able to log in and try out the technology for ourselves,” says Henrik. “Straight away we got a real ‘hands on’ sense of how Asset Bank works and how fast the system is.”
Set-up was easy, too. Unlike Telenor’s previous DAM technology, which required a serious level of IT competence, “with Asset Bank, we just needed to know how to make a folder,” says Henrik. “That was it.”
Telenor adopted Asset Bank in December 2024, and had to extract thousands and thousands of assets from its previous system and move them over to Asset Bank by the end of January 2025.
“That was only possible because of the folder structure, which meant we didn’t need to tag every image straight away,” explains Henrik.
It was critical that Asset Bank was able to adhere to Telenor’s strict security, privacy and GDPR policies.
“For our brand, reputation is everything,” says Henrik. “So we were very pleased that Asset Bank was focused on privacy and security concerns, and able to answer any questions we had in these areas.”
For example, Asset Bank’s support team worked with Telenor’s IT staff to ensure features such as single sign-on (SSO) – which makes the logging-in process simpler and more secure for staff users – were implemented efficiently.

Initially, roll-out was limited to just 100 high-level Telenor users. “But after a month we realised Asset Bank offered functionalities that all our people should have access to,” says Henrik.
“So, now, all 11,000 employees across the group are able to log-in and use the system.”
